Robert Harrison, exec

ARDSLEY, N.Y. — Robert Harrison, a longtime furniture industry executive at retail and as a sales representative, has died. He was 78.

After beginning his career with John Stuart Furniture in 1949, he joined Vanleigh Furniture, a New York-based chain of six designer showrooms in six cities, where he rose to executive vice president and merchandise manager.

In 1977, he left Vanleigh and started Harrison Sales with his son, Daniel, representing high-end lines including Ello, Fancher, Fine Art Lamps and Carvers Guild Mirrors. He retired in 1991.

He was a volunteer for the Corporate Angels Network, which organizes free transport on corporate jets for cancer patients requiring specialized treatment.

He is survived by his wife, Bebe, son Daniel and daughter Amy Harrison-Robin, who also is with Harrison Sales.

Contributions may be made to Corporate Angels Network, Westchester County Airport, 1 Loop Road, White Plains, N.Y. 10604.

Joseph Carman III, Spring Air licensee

TACOMA, Wash. — Joseph Carman III, chairman of the board of bedding manufacturer Spring Air Northwest, has died. He was 80.

Carman was a key figure in the rise of Spring Air, and also played a key role in the International Sleep Products Assn., which he served as president for two terms.

He won ISPA's Exceptional Service Award in 1987, an award his son, Joseph Carman IV, who remains involved in the business, won earlier this year.

Joe Carman III joined his father in the family business, Carman Mfg. Co., founded in 1891 by his grandfather, Joseph L. Carman. That business thrived and grew to become Spring Air Northwest, one of the first licensees of the Spring Air Co., and a major force in the bedding industry in the Northwest.

He was a Spring Air board member for almost 35 years.

"He was respected by all who knew him and will be greatly missed," Spring Air said in a statement.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Barbara, sons Joe Carman IV and Philip Carman, daughters Lisa Rohrback and Sally LeFeber, and seven grandchildren.
