Market hub work set for next spring

High Point — Construction on the first phase of an overhaul of the market's transportation hub will begin next spring, directors of the International Home Furnishings Market Authority were told last week.
Market Authority President Judy Mendenhall said the design for the $1.7 million project will be finalized by December, and construction will begin soon after next April's market. It will be completed in time for the October 2005 market, she said.
The project involves widening a one-block section of Commerce Avenue between Hamilton and Wrenn streets to accommodate a larger passenger waiting area, and three lanes for bus loading and unloading during peak travel hours.
Included in the project's cost is purchase of a slice of property from Showplace, the showroom building whose main entrance faces the terminal.
The bulk of the money for the project is coming from a grant of nearly $800,000 from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The remaining funds are coming from the North Carolina Department of Transportation, the city of High Point and the Market Authority.
Long-range plans call for a permanent canopy to cover a three-block section of Commerce that is closed to all but emergency vehicles and shuttle buses during market. A federal grant is being sought for that phase of the project, which could cost $5 million to $6 million.
