HIGH POINT -- Safety is the No. 1 priority in making children’s furniture, but storage is the top challenge, said Glenn Prillaman, senior vice president of Young America, Stanley’s youth division.
“Who has the most stuff in the family? The kids,” said Prillaman. “And who has the smallest rooms? The kids. That’s why Young America continues to focus on innovative storage solutions.”
Manufacturers like Young America are increasingly using trundles, drawer systems and storage doors to make better use of the empty space. Prillaman said one of its best sellers is an under-bed storage unit with four drawers and adjustable shelf. “It offers the same storage capacity as a five-drawer chest,” he said.
After a few nursery items were well received, Young America decided to create a whole nursery line called Young America Baby.

The company is offering cribs, dressers, changing stations, chests, armoires and transition beds for 12 existing groups. The transition bed is a twin bed with optional side rails that also allows the bedding to be dropped to a lower setting, putting a child a few inches closer to the floor. Using only the mattress without the box springs for toddlers would lower the child further. As the child grows, the bed can then be used like a regular twin bed.
