Bassett developing Scurry nursery group for Babies R Us

Jeff Linville -- Furniture Today, November 21, 2004

HIGH POINT -- Nursery furniture is at the heart of a new licensed furniture deal between Bassett Furniture and designer Pamela Scurry for a youth group exclusively for Babies R Us.

Bassett Furniture is partnering with designer Pamela Scurry to develop a youth line exclusively for Babies ‘R Us. The initial group includes a crib, three-drawer chest with optional changing top and a chifforobe.

Bassett Furniture is partnering with designer Pamela Scurry to develop a youth line exclusively for Babies ‘R Us. The initial group includes a crib, three-drawer chest with optional changing top and a chifforobe.

The initial Pamela Scurry collection will encompass a crib, three-drawer chest with optional changing top, and chifforobe. The limited-SKU group will be available in Babies R Us stores across the country in December.

“Pam Scurry is known for taking the ordinary and making it extraordinary,” said Lex Bendall, Bassett vice president of juvenile. “She has done just that in Bassett’s infant furniture.”

Bendall added, “Consumers want the same quality and design for their babies as they do for the rest of the home.”

Scurry said she chose Bassett because of the company’s reputation for high quality and design. She said, “There is a need in the market for a pretty, antique-inspired collection, and we are working with two fine companies, Bassett and Babies R Us, to bring this to consumers.”

The collection is a neoclassical design with crisp, clean lines. The canopied crib has a curved headboard and footboard, while the bedpost finial is inspired by an antique. The chest of drawers has fluted sides and replicated glass knobs. The chifforobe has a door cabinet, coordinating side fluting as well as glass knobs.

Scurry also has licensed deals with Mohawk Home, which makes floor coverings and throws, and Troutman Chair. Scurry is the owner of Wicker Garden’s Children, an exclusive store of elegant children’s furniture and clothing located in New York.

In recent years, a focal point for Bassett has been growing its line of Bassett Furniture Direct stores. The company has more than 100 now, with plans to open 20 to 25 new stores each year for the next five years with a goal of about 300 stores nationwide.

Laurie Berkin, Scurry’s marketing agent, said Scurry does not have a deal at this time to make furniture for the BFD stores, but she is open to the idea.
