High Point gets $2 million federal grant

High Point — A massive federal spending bill passed by Congress includes a $2 million grant for improvements to the Commerce Avenue transportation terminal at the heart of the furniture market's shuttle system.
The grant would allow the city of High Point to erect a permanent canopy over at least a portion of a three-block section of Commerce that is closed to vehicles during furniture markets.
"We were very excited to learn we would be receiving the money," said Judy Mendenhall, president of the International Home Furnishings Market Authority. She said she didn't know the money was in the final version of the bill until she heard from the office of Rep. Howard Coble after the measure passed the House. Coble is a Republican whose district includes High Point.
Mendenhall said no time-table for the project has been established. City officials aren't sure when the money will be made available.
Work is proceeding on the first phase of the transportation terminal improvements, a $1.7 million project to widen a one-block section of Commerce between Hamilton and Wrenn streets. Construction will begin after the April market and will be finished before the October 2005 event, she said.
Funding for that project includes an $800,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, with other money from the North Carolina Department of Transportation, the city of High Point and the Market Authority.
