WMC hires Sawyer as COO

LAS VEGAS -- The World Market Center has hired Gerald Sawyer as chief operating officer of the market complex under construction here.
In the newly created position, Sawyer will lead WMC's team — including General Manager Dave Palmer and the leasing staff — and oversee planning, operations and infrastructure for the estimated $1 billion project.
Before joining WMC, Sawyer was an Air Force colonel and base commander at Nevada's Nellis Air Force Base, one of the largest U.S. military bases, where he led a 5,000-person organization.
In a press release, Sawyer said he was excited to be part of the WMC project.
"The scope of the World Market Center can be viewed as building and managing a 'city within a city,' and I believe my experience is well-suited for this comprehensive and dynamic venture," he said.
The first-phase, 1.3 million-square-foot WMC building is under construction and expected to be ready in time for its first furniture market July 25-29. Plans call for the World Market Center to eventually have 7.5 million square feet of home furnishings showrooms on its 57-acre campus near downtown Las Vegas.
