Owens Corning enters FR arena

TOLEDO, Ohio -- Building materials giant Owens Corning is entering the mattress flammability category with a new product, Owens Corning Fire Resistant Filler Cloth.
It is designed to help mattress manufacturers meet the new open-flame mattress flammability regulations that go into effect in California on Jan. 1.
The product is made of fire-resistant and self-extinguishing fibers. The FR cloth is bonded to standard non-FR filler cloth — which looks, feels and installs just like traditional materials that are applied to the bottom of single-sided mattresses, the company said.
Owens Corning says the product is inherently fire-resistant without additional chemical treatments, and effectively shields foam and other flammable comfort materials within the mattress and the foundation. Describing it as manufacturer-friendly, the company also said the cloth meets industry standards for grab, tear and elongation strength.
"While compliance with new regulations often results in costly or complicated process changes, Owens Corning FR Filler Cloth provides a one-of-a-kind solution that meets this challenge by fitting into the existing manufacturing process," said J.P. Blanchard, market manager for OC Veil Technologies North America. "Because there is no change in the way the product handles, it requires no employee retraining."
Blanchard said the new product is consistent with the company's goals.
"The fact that this product both meets manufacturers' needs and is so key to consumer safety in the home is particularly exciting for our company," he said. "Our corporate purpose is to deliver solutions, transform markets and enhance lives — and this product truly delivers on all three."
Founded in 1938, Owens Corning had sales of $5 billion in 2003.
