Las Vegas — The World Market Center has hired Gerald Sawyer as chief operating officer of the market complex under construction here.
In the newly created position, Sawyer will lead WMC's team — including General Manager Dave Palmer and the leasing staff — and oversee planning, operations and infrastructure for the estimated $1 billion project.
Before joining WMC, Sawyer was an Air Force colonel and commander of Nevada's Nellis Air Force Base, one of the largest U.S. military bases, where he led a 5,000-person organization.
"The scope of the World Market Center can be viewed as building and managing a 'city within a city,' and I believe my experience is well-suited for this comprehensive and dynamic venture," he said in a press release.
The first-phase, 1.3 million-square-foot WMC building is under construction and is expected to be ready in time for its first furniture market July 25–29.
