Springs develops new FR fabrics

David Perry -- Furniture Today, December 14, 2004

FORT MILL, S.C. -- Springs Inds., the creator and patent holder for Firegard fire-barrier technology, has developed a new line of flame-resistant barrier fabrics for the residential bedding arena that will be marketed by Value Ticking.

The line includes both decorative tickings and non-decorative interliner products. Mattresses built with the products have successfully passed California's new mattress flammability test, Value Ticking officials said.

The technology has been used for several years in institutional markets, but will now be offered to the residential marketplace.

Gayden Truluck, executive vice president for Value Ticking, said her company will warehouse the products in its facilities in Welcome, N.C. Value's nationwide network of sales associates will market the Firegard line to bedding producers.

"Firegard is the only choice in the residential barrier market that has more than a decade of proven results behind it," Truluck said. "Firegard tickings have been protecting the mattresses used by college students, healthcare patients and our nation's armed forces since the early 1990s. We are very excited about the prospects for success of these completely redesigned Firegard products in the residential market."

Truluck said that while the FR ticking products probably won't meet all producers' ticking needs, they are a first step toward providing an FR solution on the outside of the mattress.

The Firegard products, which consist of woven and knitted FR yarns, don't rely on chemically added FR protection, she said. They are also American-made, which she said is a plus for manufacturers worried about possible delays in receiving goods from overseas.

The company did not disclose the cost of the products per mattress.

While the woven Firegard products are the ticks themselves, the knitted products are designed to be used as barriers under the ticking.

A flat knit is available in a circular sock application that fits all sizes of mattresses, safely protecting them from fire. That application is particularly well suited for the increasingly popular visco-elastic foam beds, Truluck said.

Commercial Bedding Co. of Clearwater, Fla., built the mattresses used to evaluate the performance of the new Firegard products.

"The Firegard barrier was just what I was looking for," said Carl Calhoun, Commercial's president. "It is easy to integrate into my production operations and it does not contain chemical add-on treatments that I have to worry about with my customers or employees."

He also said the FR tickings "did not change the way the beds felt — and they looked great."
