Value Ticking offers Springs FR line

Fort Mill, S.C. — Springs Inds., the creator and patent holder for Firegard fire-barrier technology, has developed a line of flame-resistant barrier fabrics for the residential bedding arena to be marketed by Value Ticking.
The line includes both decorative tickings and non-decorative interliner products. Mattresses built with the products have passed California's new mattress flammability test, Value Ticking officials said.
The technology has been used for years in institutional markets.
Gayden Truluck, executive vice president of Value Ticking, said her company will warehouse the products in Welcome, N.C., and will market it to bedding producers nationwide.
"Firegard is the only choice in the residential barrier market that has more than a decade of proven results behind it," she said.
Truluck said that while the FR ticking products probably won't meet all producers' ticking needs, they are a first step toward providing an FR solution on the outside of the mattress.
Firegard products, consisting of woven and knitted FR yarns, don't rely on chemically added FR protection, she said. They are American-made, which she said is a plus for manufacturers worried about possible delays in receiving goods from overseas.
The company did not disclose the cost of the products.
While the woven Firegard products are the ticks themselves, the knitted products are designed to be used as barriers under the ticking. A flat knit is available in a circular sock application that fits all sizes of mattresses. That application is especially well suited for visco-elastic foam beds, Truluck said.
Commercial Bedding Co. of Clearwater, Fla., built the mattresses used to evaluate the Firegard products' performance.
"The Firegard barrier was just what I was looking for," said Carl Calhoun, Commercial's president. "It's easy to integrate into my production and it doesn't contain chemical add-on treatments that I have to worry about."
He also said the FR tickings "did not change the way the beds felt — and they looked great."
