Ellicott city, Md. — Mark Craven and Mac Joiner won the highest honors at the Maryland/D.C. Home Furnishings Representatives Assn. awards banquet here.
In addition, Janet Shockey of Gladhill Furniture, Rockville, Md., was elected to the Retail Salesperson Hall of Fame. She was tops among five nominees, based on criteria including sales volume, leadership and customer service.
Craven, who will take office in March as president of the International Home Furnishings Representatives Assn., the chapter's parent organization, received the Morris M. Chernoff Award.
Named for the late Moe Chernoff, who founded the chapter and guided it through its formative years, it honors Craven for his dedication to his profession and his leadership, integrity and the respect he has earned from his dealers and peers.
"The true meaning and true value of our association is the people in it — people that I had the opportunity to know, to learn from and to share great moments with," Craven said. "This association was created so as to be a 'beacon in the night' for the rep, to help guide the rep toward true professionalism, each of us serving to support each other in this process, so as to make our entire industry better for all."
Joiner, a rep for Hooker Furniture, won the Maryland/D.C. chapter's first Representative of the Year award.
Three stores also were recognized as 2004 Retailers of the Year: Colony House in metro Washington, Gardiner's Furniture in metro Baltimore and Martin's Fine Furniture, Hagerstown, Md., for the more rural areas.
