Serta resigns from ISPA
Says association doesn't meet its needs
By David Perry -- Furniture Today, January 9, 2005
Hoffman Estates, Ill. — Serta, which has been one of the largest members of the International Sleep Products Assn., has resigned from the bedding trade association.
"We have assessed Serta's 2004 expenditures to ISPA to determine their impact on Serta's primary goal — which is to help our retail partners grow their business," said Bob Sherman, president of Serta International. "While we met the needs of our business partners this year, ISPA did not help us accomplish this priority. Therefore, we have decided to resign our membership."
This isn't the first time a bedding major has left ISPA. Sealy, the industry's largest producer, left ISPA in the summer of 1995 but rejoined in April 1997.
ISPA Chairman Tom LeDuc expressed disappointment at Serta's departure, but said that ISPA is meeting the needs of its members.
"We are in the third year of implementing the strategic plan for our association that was developed by all of our membership," he said. "This strategic plan was designed to be timely and responsive to changes. All industries constantly face challenges, and the need for professional representation is critical."
LeDuc did not say whether ISPA would need to reduce its staff or programs as a result of Serta's departure.
"As with any organization ISPA continually reviews its structure, programs and financial condition," he said. "The first priority is to service the membership in the most effective way possible. ISPA is in a good position to do just that with our current organization but stands ready to respond to changes. ISPA has achieved strong financial performance in these most recent years and looks forward to continue to enhance the value of our association."
LeDuc, managing director of Spring Air West, a Spring Air licensee, contended that ISPA has helped boost unit and dollar sales in the bedding industry through its research and its communications with retailers.
Sherman said Serta will review its ISPA membership on an annual basis.
