Simmons Canada rolling out new coil for no-flip Beautyrest
Michael J. Knell -- Furniture Today, January 9, 2005
Mississauga, Ontario — Simmons Canada will usher in the next generation of single-sided sleep with its new Evolution Non-Flip Pocket Coil, to be installed on all Beautyrest models this year.
Ron Dennis, vice president of marketing, said the coil has been in development since mid-2002, when the company concluded that consumer demand for better single-sided sleep would lead to the phasing out of the current bell-shaped coil, whose shape is geared to support the body regardless of which end is up.
"What we did was open the coil at the bottom, giving it a more asymmetrical shape," he said. "The wider diameter at the base gives much more stability, giving us a very stable, very comfortable product."
The Evolution coil also allows the glue-line to be set about a half-inch lower than on other mattresses, adding to the comfort level.
"It's just a really neat coil," Dennis said, adding that it is made in Canada and will continue to be pocketed.
He added the new coil has been designed "very cost efficiently" and won't affect product pricing.
The first Evolution coil product will debut at the Canadian Home Furnishings Market, which opens Saturday in Toronto, and will be shipped to retailers beginning in February.
"Evolution will be featured on our Beautyrest product in 2005 and will be rolled out across the rest of our lineup beginning in 2006," Dennis said.
Simmons U.S. has applied for a patent on Evolution but probably won't introduce it into the U.S. product line this year, he said. Simmons Canada plans to apply for a Canadian patent as soon as the U.S. patent is granted.
