Fearless forecast: 2005 will be big bedding year
David Perry, Executive Editor -- Furniture Today, January 9, 2005
It's customary as a new year dawns to offer some bold predictions for what lies ahead. In that spirit, I hereby make the following fearless forecast: 2005 will be a big year for bedding coverage in Furniture/Today.
The basic outline of our bedding coverage is our Editorial Calendar. This year's version calls for a total of 11 major bedding projects, in addition to an even dozen of our popular Bedding Benchmarks feature, now in its third year.
Our first quarter schedule looks like this:
Jan. 24: Flammability Update.
Jan. 31: Bedding Benchmarks.
Feb. 7: Bedding Import Outlook.
Feb. 21: Bedding Benchmarks.
March 21: Bedding Benchmarks.
March 28: Bedding Retail Innovators.
We've got some special things planned for those projects. Our Flammability Update will include a Volvo executive's comments on the benefits of safety as a marketing message. Our Import Outlook will include assessments from several key players, including some who are already shipping Chinese mattresses into the United States.
And we've got profiles of some interesting retailers you may not be familiar with for our Bedding Retail Innovators report.
And those are just the reports on our first-quarter calendar.
As usual, there will be plenty of other bedding stories, including the breaking news stories you'll always get as a subscriber to Furniture/Today. The in-depth look at the rise of Serta International in our Jan. 3 issue is an example of the kind of timely coverage you have come to expect from us.
In case you haven't noticed, bedding is a major and growing part of Furniture/Today's overall editorial coverage of the home furnishings industry. Thanks to all of you who contribute to that coverage in so many different ways.
To get the new year off to a fun start, we leave you with this quiz: Can you identify the well-known mattress man who gazes into the sunset in this picture at right we took a few weeks ago? The answer will be revealed in a future column.
I'm looking forward to sharing another great year of bedding stories with all of you.
