Google's way to lure talent
Ray Allegrezza, Editor in Chief -- Furniture Today, January 16, 2005
Get a group of furniture people together and I can almost promise you that one of the hot potatoes will be why we can't attract more smart young people into the business.
Let me shed some light on that topic. The other night, Danny, my 16-year-old son, reminded me that if I had taken his advice a while back and purchased stock in Google, my return on that investment would have been more than enough to buy him a certain car he has his eye on.
When I smiled and shrugged, Danny took that as his opening to continue. "Besides, Google is an awesome place to work. I'm going to apply for a job there," reported my son, a young man known for an uncanny ability to build and repair computers, but not for any sincere desire to join, even part time, the American workforce.
Foolishly, I asked him to tell me what was so special about Google.
"Dad, the place is loaded with really smart people who get to work on awesome projects," he said. I also heard about how what Google does, connecting people with the information they need, is a cool, noble and worthwhile profession. Not to mention that being a part of something that matters and that you believe in is "remarkably fulfilling."
Danny also told me that Google workers can see a doctor and/or dentist on site. Ditto for massage therapists. Oh, let's not forget the gym and sauna, all within the Googleplex. And all Googlers, he added, are invited to take part in weekly roller hockey games, bike rides and walks in the wildlife preserve next door.
Should the pace create too much stress, I also learned that Googlers get 10 paid holidays and 15 vacation days their first year of employment. And for those who maintain there's no free lunch, Danny showed me on the Google Web site that all employees enjoy free lunches five days a week, plus breakfast food and all the snacks they can eat.
While I admit this probably is over the top, so is Google's performance.
I bet there's a
correlation!
