Singapore show expanding
By Thomas Russell -- Furniture Today, January 23, 2005
Singapore — In response to strong demand for space, the International Furniture Fair Singapore is adding another hall for the 2005 show, which runs March 1–5 at the Singapore Expo.
By early November, the show had booked 95% of the space in the existing five halls, and IFFS said then it would remain at five halls until 100% of the space was committed.
The show now will occupy six halls, or 550,000 square feet of space, up about 50,000 square feet from the 2004 event. The additional space, in another building at Singapore Expo, will house up to six more exhibitors, said Sharon Ang, a spokeswoman for IFFS.
The market attracted 17,126 buyers from 102 countries in 2004, with about 6% from the United States.
"This is a measure of the global furniture trade fraternity's confidence in Singapore as an effective business gateway," said Jerry Tan, chairman of the IFFS/ASEAN Furniture Show organizing committee.
The show prides itself on its strong design element, each year hosting a design competition that highlights the latest trends and styles.
"IFFS/AFS has established itself as design-centric, and the international furniture industry is looking to the show to set trends in Asian furniture, unveil breakthrough designs and be among the first to share them in the global marketplace," Tan said.
The 2005 show is expected to include some 452 exhibitors of mostly indoor furniture from 33 foreign countries. The 2004 event featured 450 exhibitors from 29 countries.
Along with indoor furniture, the show offers youth furniture, decorative accessories, components, lighting, home office, and garden and kitchen furniture.
China and Indonesia are expected to have the highest number of exhibitors next year at 72 companies each, followed by Taiwan at 60, the Philippines at 26 and Vietnam at 22.
IFFS officials said 94 of the companies planning to appear at the 2005 event are first-time exhibitors, from Belgium, Denmark, Cyprus, the Netherlands, Hong Kong, the United States and other countries.
