CHFA recognizes excellence in Canadian furniture

Toronto — Sofas International won its third consecutive Grand Medallion at this year's Canadian Home Furnishings Award gala during the winter market here.
The contemporary upholstery division of Shermag was honored with the top prize for its Slideshow collection, designed by Sofas International President and Chief Design Officer Normand Couture. The collection also received the Medallion award in the prestige category of the fabric upholstered suites category.
Another big winner was Palliser, which entered the competition for the first time in several years. The Winnipeg, Manitoba-based producer won five awards, including the Medallion for marketing concepts. It also won in prestige motion chairs for Niobi; prestige motion upholstery for Brando; premium adult bedroom for Modena; and premium leather upholstered suites for India.
A first-time winner was South Shore Inds., which took the Medallion in the popular juvenile/youth bedroom category for Collection Aquarelle.
Organized by the Ontario Furniture Manufacturers Assn., the awards recognize excellence in the design, construction and marketing of Canadian-made residential furniture. Winners are selected by a jury of retailers from across the country, representing every major channel of distribution from independent merchants to the national chains and buying groups.
The Quebec Furniture Manufacturers Assn. and Furniture West support the competition.
A total of 28 awards were presented in 16 categories from some 130 entries. Each category is divided into three segments — popular, prestige and premium — representing the good, better and best retail price points.
