Kimball leaving Home
Tom Edmonds -- Furniture Today, January 23, 2005
Jasper, Ind. — Contract furniture major Kimball International is shutting down its 11-year-old residential furniture business.
Because of the failure of its largest customer, the Breuners Home Furnishings chain, the company said manufacturer and importer Kimball Home will cease operations this spring after an orderly liquidation of inventory.
Profitability did not seem to be on the horizon for the residential division, said Dan Miller, executive vice president of Kimball International and president of its Furniture Brands Group.
The recent Breuners closing was the final straw for Kimball Home, he added. "We've worked hard, but ultimately, it is in the best interests of our employees and shareholders to pursue other businesses in which to invest our precious people and capital resources."
Kimball Home represented less than 1% of annual sales for Kimball International.
Stan Sapp, vice president and general manager of Kimball Home, will stay on at least through the transition.
"We intend to continue servicing sold orders for several weeks to allow an orderly transition for our valued customers to find other suppliers," Sapp said.
"We will honor open orders with our suppliers and where appropriate, we intend to continue the relationships with business from our other Kimball business units. And finally, we truly do value the dedication and efforts of our loyal employees and we intend to fully explore other career opportunities within the Kimball family."
