Drop-shipping spurs growth for Quebeko

Terrebonne, Quebec — Drop-shipping is proving to be a blessing for Quebeko Furniture, a ready-to-assemble furniture producer that is finding expanded distribution opportunities through Internet sites and catalogs.
Specializing in office, entertainment and bedroom, Quebeko has brought on industry veteran Mo Gingras as director of sales and marketing. Formerly with Bestar, Gingras is targeting large online retailers and catalogers for growth.
The strategy is paying dividends as major Web sites, such as Walmart.com and Target.com, to name a couple, are showing much more furniture through the Internet than in their stores. Quebeko has placed products on some of these sites.
"This is helping us expand in the States," Gingras said.
Specializing in colorful, contemporary flat-pack designs often highlighted by metal accents, Quebeko is neither an entertainment nor office specialist, but the company includes several pieces from both categories in all of its collections, which usually feature bedroom and occasional tables as well.
Nonetheless, Quebeko has followed the entertainment trend and beefed up its assortment of stands and multi-piece units.
"In the last couple of years, we have introduced many different wall units and plasma stands, along with end tables and coffee tables to complete the look," Gingras said.
The Modulex collection that Quebeko introduced in April of last year is proving to be a popular design, along with the Pablo collection, which is available in a blond maple or espresso finish. Pieces typically retail for less than $200.
The Internet opportunity is a blessing for RTA producers, Gingras said, since "ready-to-assemble furniture has been a difficult category for the traditional furniture dealers." Nonetheless, direct-to-the-consumer shipping is not without challenges.
"There's a lot of investment in doing this right, keeping your rate of damage very, very low," he said.
