Fabric color trends: Neutrals plus a punch of fun
Gary Evans -- Furniture Today, June 1, 2009
HIGH POINT — Buyers at next week's Showtime fabric market here will see a continuation of neutral base cloths punctuated by a vibrant color wheel of what mills are describing as “fun” colors.
Textile Fabrics Associates is taking the neutral route with “very livable things” and what the company calls “a few outrageous patterns that we love” to spice up its showing. This higher-end division of Swavelle/Mill Creek won't do as much in plums as in the past, but will show blues, grays, magentas and “happy” greens.
Victor will show a range of neutrals such as browns and grays highlighted with mood colors such as chartreuse, red and aqua.
Greens, oranges and turquoise are still going strong at Big Kahuna, and the company has made a big commitment to oranges, greens, lime, rust-colored oranges, magentas, purples and other upbeat, fun colors.
Robert Allen Home's Kanjali ikat pattern will focus on the ethnic trend with clean, vivid color in three color selections: a bright, modern Peacock, a muted and ethereal Glacier, and a warm, earthy Adobe with a vintage look.
A tonal range of grays from silver to charcoal are spiked with citrine in another inventive pattern recalling a watercolor.
De Leo will offer neutrals — primarily warm tones of cream, butter, camel, sage, tan and gray, including off-white and cement gray —and a whitewashed or milky overtone on darker colors. Stronger colors for accents are peacock blue, watery blue-greens and, significantly, yellows from butter through a slightly mustard tone.
Chris Stone sees trends going in two directions: neutrals and earth tones that consumers equate with eco-friendly decor, including rust tones with a brown tint; and livelier colors such as avocado, burnt orange/tangerine orange, purples, oranges and really loud grays.
