Showtime dates to change
Susan M. Andrews -- Furniture Today, February 6, 2005
High Point — In response to overwhelming sentiment, the International Textile Market Assn. will change the dates of the semiannual Showtime fabric fair here after the July show.
Furniture manufacturers — and buyers from other segments — had been urging the change because their production cycle has been changing and they needed to make fabric decisions earlier. Many were going to New York in December to get an early look at the design studios of suppliers and then choosing not to attend Showtime.
"We have to make this show meaningful for the buyer, because otherwise, what is the point?" said Jack Cobb, president of ITMA and American Decorative Fabrics. He said that about 77% of ITMA members and buyers surveyed at Showtime in January were in favor of moving from the traditional January and July schedule. The show will shift to December and June, beginning this December.
"Some people wanted a January and June timetable, but we need to have six months between the shows, and most people favored the December and June idea," Cobb said.
"We were locked into the dates for the July 2005 show, but the show after that will be Dec. 11–14," he said. "That will give everyone a little extra time to transition. Beginning in 2006, the opening days of Showtime will be the first Sundays of December and June, except when Thanksgiving and Memorial Day create a conflict."
When that happens, he said, the show will be held a week later.
