City Furniture eyeing mall location
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, February 13, 2005
Fort Lauderdale, Fla. — City Furniture is negotiating to open its first mall store in fast-growing Wellington, Fla.
The retailer would take the nearly 140,000-square foot anchor space, formerly occupied by Lord & Taylor, in the Mall at Wellington Green, said Keith Koenig, president of the 14-store, midpriced City. If a deal is signed, it plans to open both a full-line City Furniture store and an Ashley Furniture HomeStore in the two-level space, he said.
The upscale Lord & Taylor department store closed its mall location last year.
City's news follows competitor El Dorado Furniture's announcement in December that it will open a 110,000-square-foot store in Wellington in late summer, in a former Home Depot. El Dorado's chief operating officer, Pedro Capo, said that in the next five years the thriving Wellington area west of Palm Beach is "probably going to be one of the hottest markets in Florida."
While it's not unheard of for a furniture store to take an anchor space in a mall, it is unusual. One recent example: Robb & Stucky, the upscale Fort Myers, Fla.-based chain, is opening in a former Lord & Taylor in Tampa, Fla., this month.
Koenig said Robb & Stucky's Tampa venture was "sort of what got my interest going" on the Wellington location.
