Clean up the High Point market area; or is it too late?

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, February 13, 2005

I read with interest that the High Point Market Authority has launched, or is planning to launch, a promotional campaign to bring "new" buyers to the High Point April show. Talk about locking the barn door after the herd has left, this is it!

For more years than we old-timers (I attended my first High Point market in 1961) care to remember, the city of High Point and the buildings have taken attendance at the markets for granted.

For example, the market area of High Point is just plain dirty. The same trash has blown around for at least 10 years and probably will continue for years to come. The vacant, deserted buildings go on their merry downhill way and are getting worse every year. As a wise man once told me, "Son, dirt don't sell!"

The folks that sponsor the market need to take a good hard look around the market area and see how much trash, garbage and other debris is cluttering the area. Also, they should look at how dirty the entrance doors, floors, restrooms and stairwells have become. This is not a welcoming scenario.

The promotion to bring new buyers to High Point is a great idea. They are going to be disappointed, however, and wonder why they were invited to such a dirty place to spend their money.

The new invitees are sure to see the abandoned service stations and other sites that tenants have long since departed. The debris that was left behind still lingers on and collects even more dirt. As they say, "Dirt breeds more dirt."

Why don't the Market Authority folks just take a stroll around the market area and see that what they are trying to sell, no one wants to buy.

Clean it up! Put the Disney touch on it! You can bet your last dollar that the Las Vegas folks understand the Disney approach!

High Point a ghost town? What happened? Act now or lose it all. It may be too late!
