Inside Out promotes Duerstock
Clint Engel -- Furniture Today, February 13, 2005
Perdido Key, Fla. — Robert Duerstock has been promoted to president and chief operating officer of upscale retailer Inside Out Furniture & Design here, in the panhandle near Pensacola.
Formerly vice president and general manager, he was a founder of the store in 1994 along with industry veterans Stuart Kaplan, CEO, and Gail Taylor, a partner.
Duerstock worked with Kaplan and Taylor at Selling Retail International, with author John Lawhon, before Kaplan and Taylor left to join Rooms To Go in 1994. Kaplan said Duerstock has been instrumental in building Inside Out and has earned an undisclosed ownership stake in the company.
Kaplan, who retired in early December as senior vice president of stores for Levitz Home Furnishings Inc.'s Levitz stores, has said Inside Out plans to open a new warehouse and 3,000-square-foot outlet store in September, and a shopping center six miles from its current location with various tenants and possibly a home furnishings theme. One of the stores in the strip center will be an upscale furniture discount outlet.
The company also is doubling the size of its flagship store to 14,000 square feet and plans to open a Pensacola store by summer 2006.
Inside Out parent Ronin Corp. recently won contracts to furnish over 400 condo rental units in the Clearwater and Tampa areas, and over 400 units in Las Vegas. Kaplan has formed a new contract hospitality company to manage those projects. He said he won't be involved in the day-to-day operations of Inside Out.
All told, sales for the furniture business could reach $10 million by the end of this year, he said. Resources include Bernhardt, Lane, Swaim, Century, Marge Carson, Ferguson Copeland and Tempur-Pedic in bedding.
