Wickes notes management additions

Clint Engel -- Furniture Today, February 17, 2005

WHEELING, Ill. -- Wickes Furniture has hired retail veteran Bob Young as national vice president of stores and promoted Dave Mattea to national director, visual merchandising and display.

In the new position, Young is responsible for store operations including sales programs, store standards and customer service strategies for the 31-store Top 100 company. He reports to President and CEO John Disa.

Young has 30 years of retail experience and most recently was vice president of stores for G+G Retail, a 500-store clothing chain. He also has held senior operations positions at Lady Foot Locker (where he worked for Disa), Stern’s Department Stores, Seaman’s Furniture and May Department Stores.

Disa said Young’s experience and leadership skills will enable Wickes “to enhance our already strong store team and position us for continued success.”

Mattea, who had been director of Wickes’ Chicago market as well as director of visual merchandise and display, will now focus strictly on the visual in his new post.

“We are at a point of growth where we must continually refine our merchandise presentations and overall store look,” Disa said. “Dave’s high sense of style and taste will help us truly connect with our female consumer.”

Wickes also promoted Jim Ratych to regional director of Chicago. He reports to Young, as do John Koupal, vice president of stores, western region, and Tom Stout, regional director of Minneapolis. Mattea reports to Disa.

Wickes operates stores in Chicago, Los Angeles, Portland, Ore., and Minneapolis. Late last year, the company exited Pittsburgh, closing its remaining two stores and distribution center. It plans to open four stores this year, two replacement showrooms in greater Chicago and two new stores in Southern California.
