Kornmeyer's will expand current store

Tom Edmonds -- Furniture Today, February 18, 2005

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Kornmeyer's Furniture is expanding and renovating its high-end store here.
Already the largest single furniture store in Baton Rouge, Kornmeyer's will renovate and expand its Florida Boulevard location.

The building, which includes a warehouse, will be expanded by about 50%, giving it about 100,000 square feet dedicated to furniture displays.Grid2, the retail design and architecture firm, is planning the project. It's expected to be completed early next year.Kornmeyer's, a Baton Rouge merchant since 1880, has been in the same location since 1966. After consulting with the market research firm Strategic Decisions, the retailer opted to improve the current facilities rather than build elsewhere. "The research pointed out how successful we've been in building a loyal customer base, and this location will help us build a bridge to a new customer group," said Harold Bahlinger Sr., president."We may be a fifth-generation company, but we still have to think about what's next while staying within the framework of what made us what we are," he said. "We can't afford to rest on our 125 years of being in business. We've got to stay young and continue to appeal to that new customer."Rose Mary Williams, general manager, said she expects to expand the merchandise assortment at the top and the bottom, with emphasis on products that are already performing well. "We have some very successful categories that could benefit from expansion," she said.
