Mitchell Gold buys Bassett plant

Susan M. Andrews -- Furniture Today, February 23, 2005

TAYLORSVILLE, N.C. -- Upholstery producer Mitchell Gold Co. has bought a 182,500-square-foot former Bassett upholstery plant in Hiddenite, N.C., about seven miles from the company's main campus here.

Mitchell Gold, co-founder and chairman of the company, said the $875,000 purchase will support the company's growth through increased production capacity and greater efficiency.

A highlight of the new plant is its finishing operation, Gold said, which is environmentally sound and will "give us a greater ability to do more wood pieces, including full-wood frames. In addition, Bassett kept this facility in top notch condition and it is in very close proximity to our main plant."

Gold also said the finishing operation will be upgraded further and receive more enhancements.

Two smaller leased facilities will be consolidated at the new Mitchell Gold Too plant and about 25 people will be hired initially at the new facility.

Last year the company added 62,000 square feet to its primary facility here, which brought its total square footage to more than 500,000. With the new acquisition, the company covers more than 600,000 square feet. The move begins Feb. 21 and is expected to be complete by mid-March.

The Mitchell Gold Co., which employs more than 700 people, sells its residential products through such stores and catalogs as Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, Restoration Hardware, Williams Sonoma Home and Storehouse. The company also has a hotel and textiles division, with placements in high-end hotels and restaurants.
