RTA furniture: A constant evolution
By Tom Edmonds -- Furniture Today, February 20, 2005
High Point — In their fast-paced and hyper-competitive game of musical chairs, flat-pack furniture specialists are hustling to find and keep their seats. Looking for new opportunities, niches, twists on existing categories and, most of all, retail distribution, ready-to-assemble importers and manufacturers have moved into a year-round cycle of product development and trade shows.
Because of the small number of extremely large retailers who sell the bulk of their products, RTA suppliers long ago adapted to a merchandising schedule that was not entirely dependent on High Point markets. While the fall and spring shows serve as sounding boards for concepts that may be anywhere from the early to the late stages of development, the end result most often is a direct, proprietary collaboration between producer and retailer.
Thus, RTA producers frequently work on the retailer's calendar rather than a show schedule. However, shows remain important, and with RTA's expansion into new storage niches, more and more of them require participation.
On these pages, we present some of the new flat-pack products that have been introduced since October, along with information on some first-ever trade-show appearances for RTA suppliers.
