Glenn E. Lawrence, founder, Laurent Leather
Hickory, N.C. — Industry veteran Glenn E. Lawrence, the founder and president of Laurent Leather, has died. He was 70.
After college, Lawrence began his career at Hickory Chair, then worked at Deville Furniture in Hickory. He went on to become president of Sealy Furniture of Maryland.
Later, he founded leather furniture manufacturer Laurent Leather in Newton, N.C., where he was president until his death. His son David Lawrence will take over as president.
He is survived by his wife, two sons and three grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Permanent Endowment Fund, First United Methodist Church, 311 Third Ave. N.E., Hickory, N.C. 28601.
Gordon D. Whittier, founder, Whittier Wood
Eugene, Ore. — Gordon D. Whittier, chairman and founder of unfinished furniture manufacturer Whittier Wood Products, has died. He was 80.
After selling family-owned Whittier Moulding Co., Whittier and his son-in-law, Evert Slijper, launched Whittier Wood Products in 1975.
Whittier is survived by his wife, six children, 16 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Memorials may be made to Samaritan's Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, N.C. 28607.
