Thurmo-Pudic introducing second-generation visco foam

By David Perry -- Furniture Today, February 20, 2005

Thurmo-Pudic USA, a marketer of visco-elastic bedding, is introducing what it says is the second generation of the popular memory foam bedding.

"We have come as close to perfecting Generation II visco foam for the consumer market as possible," said Tom Morgan, a co-founder of the company.

He said the new visco foams will be included in bedding designed to retail from $1,399 to $1,599 for a queen set. The bedding will be distributed to retailers under the Thurmo-Pudic USA banner. A sister line will be marketed to the medical community under the ThurmoMedical Sleep Products banner.

Morgan said the new visco bedding incorporates technology developed by Charles Yost, whom Morgan called "the father of visco foam." Yost's company, Dynamic Systems, worked with NASA's Ames Research Center in the early 1970s to develop visco foam. The scientists were working on a project to improve crash protection for airline passengers.

Dynamic Systems sold the manufacturing rights for that visco material, but later developed what it says are improved visco materials. Yost remains a director of Dynamic Systems.

Morgan said the new visco foams are more supportive than the original visco foams, with faster recovery times. That makes them feel more like conventional foams, a feature he said many consumers will appreciate.

The new foams offer "maximal back support," he said, because they maintain the body's position within a narrower compression range than traditional visco foam.

Thurmo-Pudic USA is in talks with "a major bedding producer" that is interested in the company's new visco foams, Morgan said.

The company produces its visco beds in North Carolina. All are protected with Burlington House's Bioguard antimicrobial treatment, and include Nano-Pel fabric protection.

As part of its bid to expand its business, Thurmo-Pudic USA has named Brian Lorber regional manager.
