Century names 4 product managers in upholstery

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, February 20, 2005

Century Furniture has reorganized its upholstery divisions and named four product managers, all of whom report to David Blair, senior vice president of sales and marketing.

The realignment follows the resignation in December of Bob Choppa, senior vice president of upholstery marketing, who went to Thomasville Furniture as senior vice president of upholstery merchandising.

Alex Shuford III has assumed responsibility for the flagship Century Upholstery brand and the Heirloom brand, which target high-end retailers and the design trade. He also oversees the eight Century Design Showrooms.

Before this assignment he managed the company's retail display initiative and the Expressions retail business. Before joining Century, Shuford owned and operated fabric and design stores on the West Coast.

Eric Graham has been assigned the Elegance brand, which is positioned for better retailers. Previously, he was the Century sales representative in the Pacific Northwest. Like Alex Shuford III, he is a third generation furniture veteran. His grandfather founded Slumberland, based in Little Canada, Minn., and he worked in his family's store before operating his own store in Jackson Hole, Wyo., for seven years.

Randy Wells will assume responsibility for what is now called the Destinations Upholstery brand. He also manages Century's Leisure Division.

"Randy has been charged with the goal of redefining entry-level luxury upholstery. We are going to begin with a blank piece of paper and build a program that satisfies unmet needs at sensible price points," said Bob Maricich, Century president and CEO.

Wells previously was national sales manager for the Century's Contract Division.

Phil Brown will continue to manage the leather and occasional chair businesses.

"Century is one of the few companies that has a dedicated chair plant with the ability to support decorative finishes. Phil has done an extraordinary job with silks, and the overall business is up considerably," said Maricich.
