Louis E. Friedman, Douglas Furniture

Cincinnati — Louis E. Friedman, eastern region sales manager for Douglas Furniture, died unexpectedly at his home here.

Friedman, 55, had worked for Douglas for 25 years. Known to his friends as "Big Lou," he worked in the retail and wholesale furniture business in the Cincinnati area before joining Douglas as a sales representative in 1980.

At the time, Douglas was based in the Chicago area. When the company later moved all its operations to the West Coast, Friedman became the company's emissary in the east.

"Lou inspired by example, and his absence will leave a tremendous void in the many lives he touched each day," said Ken Salm, senior vice president of sales at Douglas. "His warmth, generosity and professional integrity earned him the admiration, respect and affection of his peers as well as his customers and colleagues in the home furnishings industry."

Survivors include his wife, a son and a sister. One of his nephews, Jared Frank, is a sales associate for Douglas in Michigan and Ohio. Another nephew, Jeffrey Lane, is manager of sales administration at the company's corporate office in Redondo Beach, Calif.

Memorial contributions may be sent to The Maxine Friedman Cardiovascular Fund, c/o Jewish Community Center, 7420 Montgomery Road, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45236.

David Scott Culler, industry veteran

High Point — Industry veteran David Scott Culler has died. He was 49.

Culler was purchasing agent for 29 years for Braxton Culler Inc., a manufacturer of upholstered and wicker furniture founded by his brother R. Braxton Culler III. Another brother, Randy Culler, is owner of furniture design firm RCR Development.

Other survivors include his wife, parents, sister and several nieces and nephews, including Brac Culler and Josh Culler, both of whom are also with Braxton Culler Inc.

Memorials may be sent to Emerywood Baptist Church, 1300 Country Club Dr., High Point, N.C. 27262, or the American Cancer Society, 4-A Oak Branch Dr., Greensboro, N.C. 27407.

Donal O'Donnell, Dayton's executive

Edina, Minn. — Donal O'Donnell, who retired in the mid-1980s after a 50-year career as fashion director for home at Minneapolis-based Dayton's department stores, has died. He was 86.

In the 1970s, O'Donnell was the creative force behind the creation of Dayton's home stores — still a healthy division of the company, which now is called Marshall Field's. After his retirement, he continued as a consultant for the company and also for retailer Target. He was working on a fashion trend report for Target at the time of his death.

He was an interior designer by training and in 1963–64 served as president of the American Society of Interior Designers.

Survivors include three daughters, a son, five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and three sisters.
