Designer lines set to go: Hampton fills father's shoes at Hickory Chair

Hickory, N.C. — Alexa Hampton, president and featured designer of Mark Hampton Inc., has created a 40-piece collection of classically styled furniture for Hickory Chair to be introduced this week at premarket in High Point.
Hampton, the daughter of late design icon Mark Hampton, joins Thomas O'Brien and Mariette Himes Gomez as the design trio for Hickory Chair, "all offering classic design but each with significant differences," said Jay Reardon, the manufacturer's president. He said O'Brien "represents the new modern" while Himes Gomez "is the transitional bridge bringing classic design into a modern mood."
Until his death in 1997, Mark Hampton had a successful licensed design program with Hickory Chair. Since his death, his daughter has implemented several of his furniture programs that had been in the works.
"Alexa's approach is a more youthful approach to finishes, scale and the use of classic design," Reardon said. Said Hampton, "I'm not interested in exact reproductions, but in reinterpreting classic designs for today."
Her collection is built not on suites of furniture but on pieces, each with a personality that can change radically depending on finishes and fabrics. One signature piece is a tufted fabric bed, which is made in Hickory Chair's upholstery plant and shipped in 14 to 21 days. A dining table, changed from the original mahogany top to rosewood, shows what Reardon says is "her cool use of veneers, a mix of tonality of woods and paints."
The collection includes bedroom, living room and dining room. All case pieces are offered in 36 finishes and paints with delivery in six to eight weeks. The upholstery showcases Hampton's fabric collection for Kravet as well as 30 fabrics selected for the new pieces. Upholstery is shipped in 14 to 21 days.
