Clifton, N.J. — Big-box home furnishings retailer Linens 'n Things is bulking up on furniture.
The 494-unit retailer is rolling out furniture departments ranging from "a couple of hundred square feet to about 1,000 square feet" in all its stores, said Jack Moore, president and chief operating officer.
The company has put furniture in about half of its units in the past year will finish the rollout this spring, Moore said. It also has featured furniture in its advertising circulars, with some on the covers.
Linens 'n Things carries three main categories of furniture. The largest is seating — chairs and stools, some upholstered, others not. Casual dining tables and chairs make up the second largest category, and ottomans the third. Most of the merchandise is imported either directly or through U.S. suppliers.
The retailer had 2004 sales of $2.6 billion, up 11.1% over the previous year. It did not disclose its furniture sales volume
