400 Kmarts to become Sears
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 13, 2005
Hoffman Estates, Ill. — About 400 Kmart stores will be converted to Sears nameplates over the next three years, Kmart Holdings disclosed last week in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
Kmart and Sears are expected to be merged into Sears Holdings later this month.
One expected result of the pairing is the sharing of some proprietary brands. Sears, for instance, is expected to sell some Martha Stewart Everyday products, a Kmart brand. This likely will bring Sears back into furniture with the development of a Martha Stewart Everyday ready-to-assemble collection. Sears abandoned RTA furniture in 2002, allocating more space to home electronics.
In its SEC filing, Kmart said the stores to be converted to Sears would be off-mall locations, in areas where demographics are in line with those of a typical Sears shopper.
