North American attendance drops

PARIS -- Reported attendance was up 8.5% at January’s Maison & Objet home furnishings show here, although North American representation slipped 6%.
Organizers of the show said 70,419 buyers attended, up from 64,915 at the January 2004 edition.Of the total, about one third were from outside France. Attendance among foreigners rose 17% from a year ago to 23,339. Regions with the largest gains were Eastern Europe at 63% and the Middle East at 55%.
North America was the only region to send fewer buyers to the twice-yearly event. Show organizers blamed the decline on the shrinking value of the U.S. dollar, which makes European travel more expensive for Americans.
