NHFA, IHFRA honoring four execs at market

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 20, 2005

Four leaders will be honored during the April market here at the 11th annual Furniture Industry Awards Gala.

Alperts in Seekonk, Mass., will be named Retailer of the Year by the National Home Furnishings Assn. Hershel Alpert, president and CEO, and Burt Tassel, executive vice president and general merchandise manager, will accept the award.

The International Home Furnishings Representatives Assn. will give a longtime member and former president, William E. Holland, its highest honor, the Harold Braun Distinguished Service Award.

IHFRA also will name Rob Sligh, chairman and CEO of manufacturer Sligh Furniture, a Pillar of the Industry.

Alperts, a contender for Furniture¦Today's Top 100 U.S. furniture stores list with annual sales estimated at more than $40 million, has been in business since 1972. It operates in a single 90,000-square-foot location in Seekonk, a southern Massachusetts city on the outskirts of the Providence, R.I., metro area.

An NHFA panel of judges chooses the Retailer of the Year based on service to the home furnishings industry, service to community, and creative leadership of the company. Most years, the association honors both a large and small retailer, but this year no small retailer was named.

Holland has been a sales representative since 1978, and for the past 22 years has represented Schnadig Corp. in North Carolina, South Carolina and southern Virginia. In 1995, he received the Lawrence K. Schnadig Award for his sales achievements. He has been active in IHFRA and was its president in 2000.

Sligh, who leads the company that his great-grandfather founded in 1880, is this year's president of the American Home Furnishings Alliance, formerly the American Furniture Manufacturers Assn. He is spearheading an effort to bring manufacturers and U.S. furniture importers together in the association, which changed its membership rules as well as its name last year.
