Carmelo Gugino Jr., Dinaire founder
Buffalo, N.Y. — Carmelo Gugino Jr., founder of casual dining specialist Dinaire, died at his home here after a long illness. He was 89.
Gugino began the company in 1946, turning out oak tables, chairs and buffets in Early American style. At one time, he employed as many as 250 people. He retired in 1998 after selling the company to the current ownership, led by President David Dunn.
During the World War II, Gugino served in the Army Air Force, flying more than 100 transport missions in the China-Burma-India theater and across the "hump" of the Himalayas in an unarmed Curtiss-Wright C-46 Commando. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal, each with an oak leaf cluster.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, the former Elizabeth Woodnutt; three daughters, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
John Ziosis, founder of Linon forerunner
New York — John Ziosis, who founded the forerunner of Linon Home Décor Products in 1969 and built it into a top importer of casual dining, outdoor and other furniture, has died. He was 76.
After immigrating to the United States from his native Greece in the 1960s, Ziosis launched Linon Imports as an importer of Greek rugs. Within a few years, the company moved into furniture importing.
Ziosis was a pioneer in bringing casual dining products from then-Soviet bloc Eastern Europe, and later broadened his sources to elsewhere in Europe, South America and Asia.
His son Jim Ziosis is president of Linon. John Ziosis also is survived by two other sons, a brother and a sister.
The family suggests that memorial donations be made to a charity that helps people in need of care. One that John Ziosis supported for many years is the Ronald McDonald House, Greek Division, 405 East 73rd St., New York, N.Y. 10021.
