Evolution of Style

Tracy Bulla -- Furniture Today, April 10, 2005

This market, the rebirth of classic styling (new and improved, of course) is in the spotlight after many seasons of contemporary design. While contemporary is still a viable and important segment of the market, the reinvented look of classic offers a refreshing perspective on the evolution of style. Here, the editors of Home Accents Today spotlight five key trends at market, ranging from traditional to exotic with a little of everything in between.

The New Classics

• Reinvented and refined designs take center stage with remarkable aplomb • Rooted in highly classic beginnings, a hint of subdued glamour simmers beneath the surface • Simplified lines clean up the look, but keep the classy classic intact • Traditional motifs, such as damask, coral and stripes, firmly establish the tone • Tailored, elegant detailing enhances the graceful setting.

Urban Artifacts

• Equal parts primitive and chic, this trend pays homage to distinctive styling and one-of-a-kind statements • Artifacts and icons figure prominently in the mix • Organic materials mesh with hand-hammered metals for downtown art gallery vibe • Citron yellow and green, plus peacock blue, make a visual splash against rich, deep finishes and burnished golden metallics • The overall feel is genuine and authentic despite a hip, urbane sensibility.

International Spirit

• Global cultures infuse designs with exotic flair and opulence • Styles range from classic to contemporary, but maintain an air of fantasy • Moroccan and ethnic inspirations spice it up with bold patterning • Wood bead trim, delicate inlay and precious metal accent with an artisan flair • Truly international in scope, this trend crosses a multitude of borders.

Uptown Asian

• Spare and minimal designs are balanced by sumptuous and excessive looks • Serence simplicity blends with cosmopolitan class • Icy, silvered metallics rule the palette with purity • Cool and reserved, this trend relies on artful order • The overriding approach is fashionable and upscale with a hint of designer attitude.

Modern Art

• Artistic influences freshen contemporary designs with a dash of personality • Clean, chic designs warm up to bright colors and abstract forms • Sculptural looks create the sense of individuality • Black is back, serving as a sleek foundation • Contemporary softens and feels welcoming, livable without losing a bit of style.
