Finnish RTA source looking to grow in U.S.

By Gary James -- Furniture Today, April 10, 2005

InCap Furniture, a producer of ready-to-assemble, solid-pine furniture based in Finland, is aiming to expand its business in the U.S. market with a select group of large national or regional retail chains.

InCap is meeting with retailers on an appointment basis during the April market in its showroom at 1220 Eastchester in High Point. The phone number is (336) 885-0964.

The company currently sells a variety of bedroom and living room furniture to Midwest hardware chain Menards. InCap also is the world's largest furniture supplier to Top 100 lifestyle home furnishings store Ikea.

InCap established a marketing arm in the United States here five years ago to develop additional channels of distribution, selling either on an OEM basis to other furniture producers or directly to major retailers.

"We are interested in partnering with large companies that are capable of selling a large volume of our furniture," said Petri Aikio, vice president of marketing. "We offer a high-quality, high-value product with a proven track record in this market. We are an option for those bored with particleboard products."

Based in northern Europe's "pine belt," InCap produces youth and adult bedroom, dining room, home office, entertainment and storage furniture. Collections include Century Place Clarendon, in a medium pine or whitewash stained finish; Century Place Rustic Brown; Emily, in French honey and rustic brown; and Nordic, in honey or rustic brown.

A five-drawer chest from the Century Place collection retails for less than $200.

All products feature premium solid Scandinavian pine construction. Wood is from renewable and certified sources, with no use of particleboard.

Other features include wood knobs, wood drawer sides, metal ball-bearing runners and metal cam-lock joinery.

InCap operates three factories in Finland. The plants employ cutting-edge technology for high efficiency and quality control. The company is ISO 9001 and 14001 certified.

In addition, the company relies on an extensive network of subcontractors. These companies, based near InCap's plants, provide pine lumber, fittings and other components on a just-in-time basis.

In addition to producing and shipping its own lines, InCap offers American customers product design services, including the ability to develop exclusive product.

Finished products are shipped on a direct-container basis, although the company also has some U.S. warehousing capabilities. It also provides toll-free customer service support for consumers who have questions about assembly or product features.

Central Europe accounts for more than half of InCap's sales; North America, for one-quarter.

InCap also exports furniture to other Scandinavian countries, the Far East and the Middle East. In 2004, the company had total sales of about 80 million euros, or US$104 million.
