Simmons raises $40,000 to aid tsunami victims
David Perry -- Furniture Today, April 10, 2005
Atlanta — It began with Simmons employees asking what they could do to help the victims of December's deadly tsunami in Asia.
That grassroots reaction at the bedding producer mushroomed into a full-fledged effort that raised almost $40,000 for victims of the disaster.
During a recent Simmons corporate meeting here, company officials presented a check for that amount to members of the American Red Cross and to local representatives of some of the affected countries. The money went to the American Red Cross Tsunami Relief Fund.
The campaign started at the 17 Simmons plants in the United States and the company's corporate headquarters in Atlanta. Employees asked how they could help, and contributions ranged from $10 to $1,000 came from Simmons people at all levels of the organization.
Then the senior management team at Simmons decided that the corporation would match the individual contributions. That boosted the total to more than $37,000.
"The response from our associates was incredible!" said Rhonda Rousch, executive vice president of human resources. "Through their initiative and caring, together we hope to make a small difference in helping rebuild the lives of those stricken by the tragedy."
Simmons has a long history of supporting local charities and investing in the communities where it does business, Rousch said.
