Mattress Giant raises funds for tsunami relief
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, April 10, 2005
Addison, Texas — Retailer Mattress Giant employee Kim Gamaitoni spearheaded a company-wide initiative that raised $8,289 for the Southeastern Pennsylvania chapter of the American Red Cross and its Tsunami Relief Fund.
"I found out that a mere 6 cents would pay for a hydration packed for an orphaned child who survived the disaster, but is now in danger of dying from dysentery," said Gamaitoni. "$253.88 will pay for a thousand survivors to receive a health kit and keep them safe from disease. Imagine if we all pitched in, how many lives we could save?"
The company matched employee donations at $2 for every dollar donated. On Jan. 29, Mattress Giant CEO Barrie Brown presented a check to Kate Judge, public relations director for the Pennsylvania chapter of the Red Cross.
Mattress Giant also honored Gamaitoni as a local employee who made a difference.
