Brazilians donate furniture to HPU

High Point — AFECOM, a consortium of 21 Brazilian furniture manufacturers, has donated its fall market showroom presentation of upholstery, wall systems, occasional goods, chairs and tables to High Point University.
"We wanted to make a good first impression in our first visit to the High Point market," said Andreia Gentilini Milan, AFECOM's export officer. "As we were identifying possible buyers, we realized that High Point University had opened Norton Hall, and concluded the highest and best use of our furniture would be with the students."
Richard Bennington, chairman of HPU's Home Furnishings and Design Department, said he hoped the donation would spur other manufacturers to help the private university.
"Surprisingly, the AFECOM donation is one of just a few donations of sample merchandise we have received," Bennington said. "Most of the Brazilian furniture will be used in the lobbies of our residence halls on campus to make them more comfortable and inviting."
Valued at about $15,000, the furniture was shown in AFECOM's temporary space in the Radisson Hotel.
Russ Childress, senior associate with Aktrin-Dossenbach in High Point, facilitated the donation. His firm is assisting AFECOM with marketing, production and logistical support services.
AFECOM is based in the heart of Brazil's furniture making region in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul.
