Up-and-coming bedding producers

By David Perry -- Furniture Today, April 10, 2005

There are perhaps 800 bedding producers in the United States, many of whom toil in relative obscurity.

In this special report, you'll meet some of those producers, such as Corsicana and Sleeptronic of Texas, Park Place of Greenville, S.C., and Symbol Mattress of Richmond.

You'll also meet Fraenkel of Baton Rouge, La., IBC of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Bedding Inds. of America of North Brunswick, N.J., and Gold Bond of Hartford, Conn. Last, but not least, you'll see how Jamison, a Tennessee-based bedding maker, has successfully joined forces with a respected British bedding company, Hypnos.

We try to shine the spotlight of our bedding coverage on a variety of different players each year, but basic math keeps us focused much of the time on some very familiar faces.

The bedding battlefield in the United States is dominated by a handful of major players. Bedding's Big Four — Sealy, Simmons, Serta and Spring Air — command almost 60% of the market. When the rest of the Top 12 producers are factored in, almost 80% of the market is accounted for.

That leaves hundreds of smaller producers to seek out slices of the remaining 20% of the bedding pie. Most of them are single-factory operators who produce for retailers in their trading area.

In this report, Furniture/Today profiles producers who aren't in the exalted ranks of the Top 10, although one (International Bedding Corp., which ranks in the No. 12 spot) is close.

Several of these producers are strongly positioned at promotional price points, an area where they say the majors are not putting as much emphasis these days.

Some have strong multi-factory businesses, while others operate from a single factory.

Six of the nine producers profiled in this report are not affiliated with a big national bedding brand, and instead make and market their own brands. Two others, IBC and Fraenkel, are affiliated with national brands (Therapedic and Englander, respectively), but also produce their own lines. Bedding Inds. of America produces both the Eclipse and Therapedic brands.

These companies share some key attributes. Each of these bedding producers has found success by identifying key niches in the market and serving them well.
