Park Place's magnetic assortment
By David Perry -- Furniture Today, April 10, 2005
Greenville, S.C. — Park Place Corp. is moving in some bold new directions with its all-new Sleep Therapy lines.
The well-respected, 74-year-old producer of conventional and specialty sleep bedding has unveiled some beds that are cool — literally. And it soothes the cares of frazzled consumers with aloe vera-treated ticking. Then, to top things off, it offers beds with therapeutic magnets.
All together, the new models comprise what could be called a magnetic assortment.
The buyers who saw the new lines at the February Tupelo Furniture Market were attracted to them, said Edwin Shoffner, vice president of sales.
"We got a fantastic response to the Magnetic Therapy and the Cool Therapy lines," he said. The Aloe Therapy beds, while promising, may need a little bit of work, he added.
The Cool Therapy models use CoolMax fibers to wick away heat and moisture. The Aloe Therapy beds utilize aloe vera-treated tickings by Deslee. And the Magnetic Therapy beds use Bioflex medical magnets. The line tops out at $1,699 in queen.
Shoffner says those pliable magnets, which are registered as Class One medical devices, promote healing by stimulating blood circulation. "This is not smoke and mirrors," he said. "This is all real."
Many athletes use magnet therapy to recover more quickly from injuries, Shoffner said. "Thank goodness a lot of people are familiar with magnetic therapy," he said. "They know it can relieve pain."
The magnets are placed in strips just beneath the mattress ticking. Bioflex is offering the magnets exclusively to Park Place at this time. Shoffner said that Park Place, which has built a reputation for integrity under the continuing ownership of the Orders family, is the perfect company to introduce this technology to the bedding industry.
"Bioflex wanted to go to a reputable company that many people respect and create awareness of this product and give the 'S' brands something to think about," Shoffner said. "Park Place is conservative in nature. (President) Jimmy Orders and his brothers won't allow a product into the field that is not safe and tested."
Introducing new technology isn't a new thing for Park Place. It entered the air bed category before that type of bedding was popularized by Select Comfort, the nation's leading bedding retailer. Park Place's Comfortaire subsidiary "continues to flourish," Shoffner said.
New from Comfortaire is the GS1100, which offers split king and queen beds and typifies the innovation the company continues to bring to the market, according to Shoffner.
The Sleep Therapy beds from Park Place offer various combinations of visco foam on top of latex foam. The company finds that to be "a powerful combination," Shoffner said. "We've been very successful with this feel."
The addition of magnets only adds to the line's attraction, he said. "Everybody is looking for the next big push in bedding," Shoffner observed. "We think magnets will be the next big thing."
