Circle is pilot store in Help 1 Up furniture bank

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, April 10, 2005

Circle Furniture here has been named an inaugural retailer of the Help 1 Up program, an effort by the home furnishing industry to support furniture banks.

As a pilot retailer, Circle will assist in fine-tuning Help 1 Up in preparation for the organization's national deployment.

The administrator of the Help 1 Up program, the Atlanta-based National Furniture Bank Assn., also said it has hired an executive director, Phil Van Poetsch. He was a founder of one of the nation's first furniture banks, the New Start Furniture Fund.

A furniture bank is a nonprofit organization that collects unwanted furniture and basic household items from the public and provides the items to people who need furniture but are not in a position to buy it.

Typical clients include women and children escaping domestic violence, families below the poverty line, victims of natural disasters and others requiring emergency assistance in setting up or rebuilding a home.

According to a 2004 survey, children make up the largest group receiving help from furniture banks.

Help 1 Up's motto is, "No child in America should have to sleep on the floor."

Help 1 Up encourages consumers to shop at participating retailers and to pay an additional 1% on their next furniture purchase, with proceeds going to the furniture bank program.

"Circle Furniture supports a number of local organizations benefiting kids," said Richard Tubman, an owner of the retailer. "Help 1 Up provides us and our customers the opportunity to be a formative part of a national effort which will help thousands of children, in the local area and all across the country."

"The Help 1 Up program will do a tremendous amount of good for families and kids in need," said Tom Polk, chairman of the NFBA. "At the same time, participating retailers benefit from increased sales and making a positive difference in peoples' lives.

Many consumers will be motivated to shop at a participating retailer, rather than a retailer that doesn't wish to support the effort," he said.
