'Vermont style' furniture makers win award from wood group

Poultney, Vt. — Bruce Beeken and Jeff Parsons, makers of what they call "Vermont style" furniture, have won the 2004 Vermont Woodworkers of the Year Award from the Vermont Wood Manufacturers Assn.
They are co-owners of Beeken/Parsons, a furniture workshop at Shelburne Farms in Shelburne, Vt.
The award was presented earlier this year.
Their furniture, which has simple yet innovative designs and makes extensive use of Vermont-grown hardwoods, can be found in libraries and offices in several Vermont universities.
Beeken and Parsons say they often use "character wood," with knots, streaks and mixtures of sapwood and heartwood, which others might consider defective.
Parsons has served as board secretary of the VWMA and now is the first president of the new Vermont Wood Products Marketing Council.
The association also presented Diane Konrady with the 2004 Friends of Vermont Wood Manufacturers award.
Konrady is the heritage tourism coordinator for the Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing, and has been a supporter of the industry.
