Home cleaning products to benefit cancer research

By Fran Marshall -- Furniture Today, April 12, 2005

Designer Connie Post and retailer Bill Huseby are introducing a line of home cleaning products to furniture retailers here.

A portion of the sales of the line, called Naturally Beautiful for Home & Family, will benefit breast cancer research at the City of Hope Center.

Bill Huseby, CEO of Becker Furniture World in Becker, Minn., spent five years and $2 million to develop a home cleaning product line with the intention of eliminating harsh chemicals and creating high-quality aromatherapy-based cleaning products from naturally derived ingredients. After the line was developed, Post joined him as spokesperson and consultant.

Post coined the line's name and repackaged the products in female-friendly pink and white boxes. Inside, clear bottles are capped in apple green and tied with ribbons.

The line includes wood furniture polish, glass and metal cleaner and spot remover. They are not animal-tested.

"Read the warning labels on all those cleaning supplies in the janitor's closet in your stores," said Huseby. "Then, go home and look through all the products stored in the cleaning closet or under your kitchen sink. Every single one contains some sort of precaution. As tightly sealed as most homes and commercial buildings are today, those chemicals all combine to create a 'sick building' effect and the impact on an individual's health can be devastating."

A donation of $1 from the sale of every box at wholesale will go to breast cancer research at the City of Hope Cancer Center.

"Few among us have not been touched in some way by this disease, and it's a cause that women universally support," Post said. "My goal is to raise $100,000 this year from sales of the Naturally Beautiful products to fight the battle."

As part of the fundraising effort, Post and Huseby are launching a campaign at market called 100 Retailers Who Care. Retailers will be asked to match the donation of $1 per box, and a check will be presented to the City of Hope at the organization's annual gala in October.

"In addition to all the good furniture retailers can do to raise money for breast cancer research at City of Hope and reinforce public awareness about hazardous chemicals in the home, cause-related marketing campaigns like this one can improve a store's corporate image and differentiate a store from its competitors in the marketplace by emotionally engaging shopper," Post said.

Naturally Beautiful products are available in the showrooms of Manchester Furniture Group, 1515 W. Green Drive; Lloyds of Chatham, Market on Green, space 308; Butler Specialty, International Home Furnishings Center, C-354 and Connie Post Cos., Showplace space 1400.
