Thomasville, Breuners make gifts

By Jeff Linville -- Furniture Today, April 12, 2005

In addition to providing furniture for television shows, manufacturer Thomasville and retailer Breuners Arizona are allowing the products to be auctioned off to raise funds for charity.

Thomasville home office desks from the British Gentry and Mission Arts collections, featured on "The Contender," have been autographed by the celebrities on the show. They will be auctioned off on eBay beginning May 15 and ending at midnight after the show's season finale on May 24.

All proceeds will go to three organizations selected by personalities involved with the show, which features prizefighter hopefuls. "Sugar" Ray Leonard has chosen the Boys & Girls Clubs of America; Jackie Kallen, the American Heart Assn.; and Sylvester Stallone, Heart of a Child, which funds research on congenital heart defects and works to improve the care and treatment of afflicted children.

Breuners Arizona, based in Scottsdale, took part in an effort related to its participation in an episode of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition."

During the week the show built a house for the Okvath family, the American Cancer Society held an Extreme Fundraiser Feb. 9. Breuners bought tickets for a table of 10 and also donated a bookcase filled with wicker baskets (retail $1,164) and a $250 gift certificate for a raffle drawing.

The night raised more than $50,000, which was impressive considering that the event was planned and organized in a week, said Tom Daley, Breuners executive vice president and general manager. The bookcase went for $600 or $700, he recalled, while the gift certificate, raffled for $5 per ticket, raised $1,200.

The Breuners team was delighted that the raffle winner was Carla Arias, a featured speaker that evening, said Daley. Arias lost her 5-year-old son Michael to cancer in 1999 and has three other children at home. She and her husband said they were interested in a student desk for their 9-year-old son.

Daley said the couple would be coming in soon to pick out the desk, but what they don't know is that Breuners is planning to refurnish the entire bedroom.
