McKinnon-Land-Moran offers new FR products
By David Perry -- Furniture Today, April 14, 2005
Charlotte, N.C. — McKinnon-Land-Moran, a major supplier of fire-resistant products to the bedding industry based here, has developed two new products designed to meet specific needs in the marketplace.
The company's FR fillercloth provides protection economically for the bottom of single-sided mattresses, and throughout tight-top mattresses.
The other new FR product is a knitted bed sleeve that can be slipped over a mattress to completely encase it. The ticking would then be added to finish the bed.
Developed in conjunction with Owens Corning, the fillercloth is produced from Basofil and other ingredients and is finished in a paper-like process in which the cloth comes out on a roll. The FR protection in the thin sheets of fillercloth is based on polymer science and is inherent in the product, unlike the chemically applied FR solutions offered at comparable prices, McKinnon-Land officials said.
The bed sleeve, which will be priced as a premium product, is ideal for foam-core beds, said CEO Bob McKinnon.
"You can slide this product over the mattress and sew one or both ends together," he said. "The savings in labor in the factory is substantial."
The bed sleeve will be produced in all bedding sizes and will be shipped to bedding producers ready to be installed.
McKinnon said the product is a natural for the memory foam beds proliferating in the market. The bed sleeve is a knitted version of McKinnon-Land-Moran's Alessandra product. It's also available in other tube knit widths, or in fabricated form.
Both products, based on the company's Basofil FR technology, are being patented, McKinnon said.
President Frank Land said each product could see broad use in the industry.
"One of the last roadblocks that we needed to eliminate, and one of the greatest challenges facing the industry," he said, "was to come up with a price-sensitive product for the low-end beds and for the bottom of single-sided mattresses. We have developed a vital solution for the industry."
He said the 18-month product development cycle for the fillercloth is the shortest he's seen in his decades of experience in the FR industry.
The new products further expand McKinnon-Land's FR lineup. The company offers various weights of nonwoven highloft products, made by a number of suppliers, that are used in quilt panels and borders.
Those products include offerings produced with vertical and horizontal layers. Several mattress manufacturers are utilizing those products in California and in other parts of the United States, Land said. In addition, some national retailers are using the products, he said.
Land said the company's knitted bed sleeve, its woven products and the new Owens Corning product are all being used by a number of bedding producers who sell to national retailers.
